What wireless technology do you deploy?
Mainly Ubiquiti as they are the most cost effective. We also utilise others on occasion, but not often.
When did your company first get involved in wireless?
General wireless from the late 1990s with 802.11b and with PTP from 2004. Over the past five years our business has been focused on corporate and event wireless services, alongside our PTP and PTMP fixed wireless networks.
What are your wireless credentials?
Most recently Ubiquiti certifications, and over my 27 years in IT, have completed many network training courses. To watch technology – not just wireless – change rapidly is fantastic. We are looking forwards to what’s coming next in wireless.
Who are your main distributors for wireless?
Freenet Warehouse Australia, Streakwave and Ingram Micro.
Have you heard about any cool wireless technology recently?
Faster and longer distances, less interference, more speed, lower prices. The entire wireless industry is on notice and growing so rapidly. It’ll be interesting to watch who is going to go faster and who is making a difference. Looking forwards to the next 10 years.
Can you tell us about a recent deployment?
Noise is our enemy. We recently deployed a PtMP set-up, however, with so much 5GHz around the air, finding clean channels was very difficult – and this was in the outer suburbs. Our solution was to shut down PtMP and only set up PTP services. We are finding more and more deployments simply flood the air with noise. It’s only going to get harder, too.
What is driving customers’ wireless projects?
More speed, less congested downloads, and reliable fast business internet.
Wireless is…?
Like getting your licence when you’re 18 – it’s freedom to go places and do things differently and efficiently. Work, play and chill from anywhere. Just wish it was more play and chill, than work!
