Networking Q&A: Amcom
Brett Looney

What networking solutions do you deploy?

Amcom has a national MPLS Layer-3 network built on Cisco technology. We’re a national data network provider with solutions for corporate, government and wholesale customers. Where we don’t have our own fibre network, we partner with wholesale providers.

When did your company first get involved in networking?

Amcom has offered carrier-grade ethernet solutions to business for over 15 years. Our staff have worked on network and internet technologies for more than 25 years.

What networking certifications and/or credentials does your company have?

We have technical, project management and business analysis certifications. We are a Cisco Gold partner, Cisco CMSP and Master Service Provider plus VMware Enterprise Solution Provider, EMC Gold business partner, VCE partner and Microsoft Gold partner.

Who are your main distributors for networking technologies?

We are a network wholesaler and retailer with more than 300 channel partners.

What cool or interesting recent networking technology is occupying your thoughts?

A few of the more recent projects such as developing UC solutions that address more flexible work environments and hot-desking (logging a user on to a phone automatically). Also, knowing where a user is located so at all times so they’re easier to find and know when they’re available.

Can you tell us about a recent networking deployment you have done?

Wi-fi networks for Western Australian hospitals, including one recently built south of Perth. Virtual private networks and WAN for government bodies. A wi-fi network for a resource company’s sites in remote locations.

What is driving customers’ networking projects?

Customers want their networks to be easier and cheaper to manage. With cloud, customers need more robust, faster networks to support applications. We design enterprise networks to be simple and redundant, wrapped in managed services.

Networking is ...?

Essential to life as we know it. Without a reliable network, nothing else works.
