All Dick Smith stores to shut by 30 April

Receivers Ferrier Hodgson have announced that the remaining Dick Smith stores will be closed by 30 April.

In addition, 35 Dick Smith stores have been given their exact closure dates.

The receivers reiterated that Dick Smith’s employee entitlements rank as the top priority of unsecured claims ahead of secured creditors, and are expected to be paid in full.

“We would like to thank the Dick Smith employees for their support during the controlled closure process,” said receiver James Stewart. “This is a difficult and uncertain time for them and we have really appreciated their commitment.”

An unnamed Dick Smith employee told Fairfax last week that staff couldn’t find new jobs until management specified when stores would close. This is because employees will void their redundancy entitlements if they resign before a notice of redundancy. He added that Dick Smith is required to give employees four weeks’ notice if they were made redundant.

On February 25, Ferrier Hodgson first announced Dick Smith stores would close, leading to the loss of 2,460 jobs.

Online electronics reseller Kogan bought selected intellectual property from Dick Smith on 15 March, with the intent to continue the Dick Smith brand as a separate online store. However, Kogan said at the time it didn't intend to reopen brick-and-mortar Dick Smith stores.
