Telstra has gone live with Cisco Cloud Services in Australia, with the first partners and customers in the country trialing the service.
The carrier stated the “selected” customers and partners are in trial mode, but wouldn’t reveal which partners are involved.
At the same time, Telstra has extended its Cisco Intercloud platform offshore to Hong Kong and Singapore.
The news is a significant milestone for the rollout of Cisco’s cloud, which will represent a $1 billion investment for the vendor.
Australia has been cited by Cisco as a key market for Intercloud – Telstra and Dimension Data were among the first Intercloud partners globally. Cisco president, development and sales, Rob Lloyd, has previously said Intercloud will arrive in Australia first.
As well as using its own data centres, Cisco will partner with the likes of Telstra and Dimension Data to offer hosting.
Today’s Telstra announcement described Cisco Cloud services as an OpenStack-based infrastructure-as-a-service, “adding a public cloud offering to Telstra’s existing infrastructure capabilities in Australia, Asia and Europe.”
Intercloud’s arrival comes as the public cloud activity in Australia ramps up, with Microsoft’s Azure now in “private preview” with Australian customers and partners, and general release expected by Christmas.
