Tired of having to trek across the office to pick up your printed documents? Fuji Xerox has the answer.
The company has developed a robot printer that travels around an office or business lounge delivering printouts to the people who ordered them.
According to Nikkei Tech On, which first reported the story, the robot printer is currently being tested in a Tokyo business lounge.
Each of the desks in the lounge has a smart card. In order to print from the device, users visit a URL printed on the card and drag-and-drop the file into the open browser window.
When the robot receives the request to print, it starts moving towards the person who made it, using the same Lidar sensors as Google's self-driving cars to detect and avoid collisions with objects and people.
Once it arrives at the person's desk, they hold up the smart card to the robot to start the print job. The robot waits to print the document in order to avoid confidential documents being seen by others in the business lounge or office.
The robot printer prints on paper up to size A4 and once it has finished printing returns to its "home position" in a corner of the lounge.
Sadly, there's no word yet on whether we can expect the robot printer to grace our offices and business lounges in Australia, but we can always dream.
