Megaport announces Asia Pacific rollout
Megaport CEO Bevan Slattery.
Megaport has announced plans a SG$20 million dark fibre rollout and additions to its senior executive team and head count in the Asia Pacific region.

The company will build a SG$20 million dark fibre network in Singapore as part of plans to grow its network across the Asia Pacific region.

The dark fibre will be rolled over the next six to 12 months and is part of a strategy outlined by Megaport to become a "leading network interconnection provider in the Asia Pacific region".

Key executives will also take up posts in a new Singapore office the company will open in the second half of this year: Belinda Flanders as channel and partner manager for Asia and Michael Glynn who will be strategic sales director for Asia (who will share time between Australia and Singapore).

The new office will house sales and project teams, with plans to recruit six people this year and another 12 in 2015.

The company announced a key milestone in this strategy this week with the announcement it has been awarded a Facilities-Based Operator (FBO) Licence in Singapore, allowing it to build and operate telecommunications infrastructure in Singapore.

The Singapore fibre rollout is the first phase in a plan for a "substantial rollout" of large capacity dark fibre. This will include 100Gbps network interconnection services across the "entire Asia Pacific region", according to a Megaport press release.

Megaport has earmarked an investment of SG$20 million for the initial Singapore rollout. The company estimates it could spend between SG$40 and SG$50 million on the network over the next three years.

The network will connect multiple data centres for data intensive, mission critical services such as disaster recovery and cloud applications. Megaport's sales pitch is that carriers and enterprises will be able to access the bandwidth at "less than half of the cost of similar services currently available."

Dark fibre has been too expensive for many companies in Singapore, argued Bevan Slattery, Chief Executive Officer of Megaport. "This has provided us with a significant opportunity to enter the market and rollout our own dark fibre network at a more competitive price point," he said in a statement.

"Infrastructure-as-a-service has changed the way organisations use and manage information technology assets. Telecommunications services have to date resisted this change, attempting to match traditional pricing and long-term contracting models to the on-demand pay-for-what-you-use nature of cloud services," said Bevan Slattery, Chief Executive Officer of Megaport."

He said Megaport's connectivity options can be "purchased only for the duration they are required, whether it be months, weeks or even days and at a fraction of the price."

Megaport has 100 enterprise and carrier clients and 18 data centres in Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne. Clients include Amazon Web Services and M2 Telecommunications.
