iPhone 5: what Aussies can expect

Apple today confirmed long-running rumours by announcing an event for September 12, in what is expected to be the release of its next-generation iPhone.

Apple is staying traditionally tight-lipped on the upcoming launch, but invitations issued to media for the New York event suggest Apple may not follow the iPad path and ditch the numerical naming for its smartphone device.

The invitation is shown with a large number 12 casting a shadow in the shape of a 5. Apple was expected to call its third-generation iPad the ‘iPad 3” when it launched in March, but instead ditched the numerical listing to instead name it the “new iPad”.

Specs

The iPhone 5 has been reported to have a wide array of new features, but it will most likely include a larger 4in, 16:9-format wide retina display screen compared to its predecessor’s 3.5in display, a relocated headphone jack, in-cell touch panel technology designed to make the smartphone its thinnest yet, as well as a smaller, redesigned dock connector - down from 30 pins to a possible 19.

It has also been reported to include 4G connectivity, but is unlikely to be compatible with Australia’s LTE networks.

Local availability

Prior to the iPhone 4S and iPad 3, Apple forced Australians to wait for its new devices. At its March launch of the new iPad however, Australians were one of the first to get their hands on the new tablet, indicating Aussie buyers should once again be at the top of the pile for the new iPhone.

Despite the confirmed September 12 launch, the iPhone 5 is not expected to start shipping until the 21st of September.

It is expected to follow in its predecessor’s footsteps and be available through Telstra, Optus and Vodafone, as well as through Apple’s own retail centres and that of its premium partners such as Next Byte.
