Australians warned of Microsoft support scam

A group of scammers operating out of India is once again targeting unsuspecting Windows computer owners in Australia, cold calling numbers and taking people’s credit cards to fix falsely -diagnosed security problems.

The scam was first noted almost a year ago before activity tapered off.

In the last week, however, several consumers have reported receiving calls from men and women, apparently with ‘Indian accents’ asking them to switch on their computers so as to determine their status.

Among the ‘fake’ issues cited by scammers are problems with Microsoft event manager. Consumers reported being asked to click on various links within Event Manager with callers trying to dupe then into believing there were critical errors.

The scammers have reportedly been quoting up to $400 to fix the problems.

People have been asked to visit the website http://www.techforhelp.com for more information. Yet suspicions are immediately aroused by the preponderance of such humourously bad sentences as:

We are the best friend of computer, is your computer interested for friendship?

Another website created by the scammers is http://pcserviceq.net/

A suspicious post singing the praises of the so-called support company was identified by independent consumer blog Reverse Australia as probably from the scammers themselves. It came from an Indian IP address (110.172.52.162).

Reverse Australia published several numbers noted by Australian consumers as having appeared when they answered calls, or that were given to them by scammers hoping to be called back.
