What credentials do you have that apply to flash?
Nexus has vendor certifications that cover flash technologies and optimising flash performance from Nimble Storage and EMC. We started deploying flash to push up cache four to five years ago. We were first to market in Australia with Nimble Storage’s hybrid flash in late 2012.
Who are your main distributors for flash?
Nimble is a direct vendor. EMC is greatly preferred via Westcon. Server vendors have flash solutions broadly across the channel.
Heard about any cool flash technology recently?
Nimble’s CASL (Cache Accelerated Sequential Layering) is very smart: it moves the limitations on performance to processor instead of disk spindles, leverages disk hardware to maximise IO and delivers the best price for IOPs and total cost of ownership for demanding applications, databases and especially VDI [virtual desktop infrastructure].
Can you tell us about any recent flash deployments?
The wonderful thing about employing flash is the user feedback. We have recently deployed a three Nimble Storage SAN solution into an APAC-based building industry firm. As well as replacing several racks of disk with 7RU of disk in each location and driving savings, we had glowing reports of daily user activities with apps, running reports and running VDI being an order of magnitude faster.
What is driving customers towards flash over traditional storage?
Flash doesn’t replace tradition storage, it augments it. There is still place for capacity-based solutions. Indeed, the bulk of data in an information life cycle is still capacity based. Smart flash, and often in our case, hybrid flash, allows much performance on virtualisation farms, key applications and VDI at a lower cost per IOP and RU [rack unit], as well as being easy to deploy and manage.
Flash is…?
Flash is another weapon in our armoury to drive good IT. It enables otherwise difficult mid-market solutions like Citrix and other VDI-style deployments where performance, cost and rack density matter. Flash opens new possibilities for our core clients and more attractive answers for prospects.
