Veeam launches instance licensing

Data protection and management vendor Veeam has launched instance licensing to replace existing subscription licensing for a number of its products.

The new licensing scheme will allow customers to use a single type of licensing across all workloads - Physical, VMware, Hyper-V and AWS workloads, on premises and across public clouds.

Veeam said the changes would not affect perpetual licences. However, customers can have both perpetual and instance subscription licensing in the same centrally managed environment.

Instance licensing will be offered by edition to accommodate the existing customer base. For new customers, Veeam said the Enterprise Plus edition provided more platform capabilities at the same price.

“This is due to how instance pricing is structured, with MSRP for all workloads (except VMs) staying the same regardless of the edition,” Veeam wrote in a blog post.

Pricing will remain the same as it was with subscription licensing, despite having increased “weightings” for certain workloads since the instances are sold by edition.

New Veeam products, starting at Update 4 of Availability Suite 9.5, Backup & Replication 9.5 and Backup Essentials 9.5, and the Veeam Availability Orchestrator will be sold in bundles of 10 licences. Other products like Veeam Availability Orchestrator and Veeam Backup for Microsoft Office 365 will remain the same.

Veeam also added a calculator called the “Instance configurator” to help customers figure out how many licences they would need.
