Toshiba has announced its first 2.5in hard disk drive (HDD) with a capacity of 600GB, claiming that it is designed to meet growing enterprise storage demands.
The MBF2600RC marks the start of Toshiba's move into the enterprise HDD market, and the firm said that the product had been developed to offer high reliability and meet the performance requirements of businesses.
The device operates at 10,025rpm which the company claims reduces power consumption by up to 28 percent and makes it the highest capacity 2.5in form factor enterprise HDD of its kind.
Martin Larsson, vice president of Toshiba's storage device division, explained that the new device had been developed to allow companies to back up information accurately and securely.
"We have applied years of engineering expertise to the development of the enterprise-ready MBF2600RC. It is high capacity, high performance and has low energy, enabling businesses to achieve more with less," he said.
The device also features a 6Gbit/s SAS interface which Toshiba said makes the device a viable alternative to regular 3.5in HDDs used in enterprise applications for data storage.
"Businesses are under immense pressure to accurately and securely back up information and at a low cost. It is therefore vital that HDD manufactures continue to develop first rate solutions that can support storage needs," Larsson added.
