Telstra has claimed a world-first with this week’s launch of a Netgear wi-fi gateway that, according to the telco, is six times faster than existing business devices.
The Telstra Gateway Pro is the first gateway globally to use Broadcom’s 4x4 wi-fi AC chipset, said the telco’s device management director Andrew Volard.
“Wi-fi speeds are expected to be up to six times faster on 5GHz than our existing business gateway,” he wrote in a blog post.
Volard firmly aimed the product at small businesses that desire premium wi-fi performance. He boasted of test results at a Melbourne “inner city” location, which showed 50Mbps throughput achieved throughout a partitioned office.

The Telstra executive said that the device would provide “reliable connectivity so you can connect more compatible devices in your business at top speeds, simultaneously”.
“[This means] someone can be streaming video and someone else can be downloading large files without slowing down the wi-fi. Wi-fi coverage is also better than ever on this gateway meaning more people can access the top speeds in more places around the office.”
Telstra Gateway Pro is available now to Telstra ADSL, VDSL, NBN and DOT customers.
“The timing couldn’t be better as millions of small businesses upgrade their broadband services and connect to the NBN,” Volard said.
The Gateway Pro comes after Telstra launched a 600Mbps consumer 4G LTE Advanced Category 11 device in September, also in partnership with Netgear.
