Sydney-based managed services provider Quorum Systems has transformed Chatswood Private Hospital's communications network with the help of distributor Wavelink.
The hospital, owned by Presmed Australia, was moving to a new custom-built facility, larger than the previous one. Having the facilities now spread across two levels created obstacles for communicating, so Presmed decided to issue mobile phones to staff in order to facilitate communication.
Reliability was key for the hospital, according to Roger Cronin, chief executive at Presmed Australia, who said they were happy to be guided by their consultant engineer.
"He recommended Wavelink to deliver an end-to-end solution comprising a wireless network and wireless handsets that met our complete needs," said Cronin.
Wavelink’s Health Practice worked with the hospital and designed a solution consisting of a Fortinet wireless network and Spectralink wireless phones, which were delivered by Wavelink's partner Quorum Systems.
Spectralink PIVOT phones were installed as they were "ideal for a clinical environment". The phones run Android and are touch screen. The hospital's fire alarm panel was also integrated into the phone system.
Voice quality and connections were provided through Fortinet's wireless network on a dedicated 5 GHz band. The network also allows the hospital to set up guest wi-fi access on separate bands.
"Patients assume they’ll have access to wi-fi while they’re waiting for their surgery or in recovery, so it’s a service we need to provide. However, we couldn’t have patients’ use of the network affecting the phones’ performance, so they were set up on two separate bands," Cronin said.
"The Spectralink phones have streamlined aspects of patient service. Waiting times have reduced since team members stay in constant contact with each other so they know exactly when to move a patient to the next stage of their journey. Consequently, patients can wait longer in the lounge with their family members before being moved into pre-operative areas."
Wavelink trained the hospital team so they were aware of the new capabilities. "The key goals were to provide a platform to enable seamless, reliable communication between staff members and to provide guest internet access for patients. On all counts, the solution delivered by Wavelink has fulfilled these requirements," Cronin added.
Ilan Rubin, Wavelink's managing director, said: "Wavelink established its Health Practice to provide a level of specialisation to its partners by providing end customers with comprehensive solutions, not just hardware. The premise of the practice is to build solutions from use cases that improve patient care and drive operational efficiency, and this was what we delivered for Chatswood Private Hospital."
