Sony shoots on with HD surveillance

Sony Australia has launched a range of high definition pan-tilt-zoom security cameras.

Tony Lagan, national business manager for video security at Sony Australia told CRN the vendor's  range of HD products gave resellers the opportunity to help customers move away from standard definition monitoring products.

Lagan said video security is a continually growing industry that has been used across a range of vertical markets, including retail, mining, education and local government.

"HD a reliable system that can withstand difficult monitoring conditions," he said.

"When a situation calls for monitoring in low light conditions, such as in a council area car park at dusk or near an outdoor ATM, HD provides quality images regardless of light or weather conditions.

"HD captures moving objects for playback at a later time - this feature can prove especially practical when trying to track thieves or getaway vehicles used in the commission of a crime."

The negative aspects of HD technology have also been dealt with, said Lagan.

"There has been negative feedback around the amount of storage and bandwidth HD images take up," he said.

"Sony has also released network video encoders to help reduce file sizes by 80 percent."

Lagan said the integration of security surveillance with IT gave "network savvy" integrators the opportunity to move into a different field.
