Social messaging app developer Thred has appointed Qantas chief technology officer Rob James to its board of directors.
James was named as an independent non-executive director effective 12 December, joining Sol Majteles, Robyn Foyster, managing director Geoff Marshall and board chair David Wheeler.
Thred offers "unified social messaging" through its web app, aiming to help users bring together social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, as well as allowing instant access to social media friends, followers and contacts in a unified manner.
The company recently ventured into enterprise augmented reality (AR) with its Agent Reality company, which had started its business development process in November.
AR veteran Paul Willey was brought in to lead Agent Reality as its commercial director in December.
“Augmented reality is an emerging technology with enormous growth potential,” James said.
“I believe Thred has all the ingredients to become a top-tier player in this market. I am looking forward to adding value to their growth plans and building on their early success.”
Prior to joining Qantas this year, James was the chief information and product officer at William Hill Australia, and held various posts at Echo (Star) Entertainment, Posse.com, Optus, the Australian Wheat Board and Woolworths.
“I am delighted to welcome Rob as a director of the board,” board chair David Wheeler said.
“His broad technology management and sector experience, as well as his leadership experience, will deepen the board’s existing skills and expertise.”
Last year prior to its $6 million initial public offering, Thred was awarded US$120,000 (A$160,000) worth of Azure credits by Microsoft through the software vendor’s BizSpark program.
As part of the program, Microsoft offered Thred access to new development and technical support for the development.
