[Opinion | Channel Guru] Are your customers moving faster than you?
Lee-ann Dias,

There’s a quiet shift happening in the tech world and it’s catching many MSPs and IT service providers off guard.

You walk into a meeting ready to introduce a new idea, only to hear your customer say, “I saw that on YouTube last week.” Or worse, they’ve stopped involving you in strategic conversations altogether.

It’s not just awkward - it’s a warning!

Your customers might be moving faster than you.

They’re learning on the fly, exploring new tools, and tapping into online communities to solve problems. And if you’re not keeping pace, they may look elsewhere.

From Fixers to Forward-Thinkers

Traditional MSPs thrived on a reactive model: fix what’s broken, deliver what’s asked. But those days are fading. Today’s customer wants a partner who can guide them, challenge their thinking, and help them innovate.

They're consuming content, experimenting with automation, and diving into AI often before you’ve mentioned it.

And increasingly, they’re asking: Why isn’t my provider already on top of this?

Three Signs You're Falling Behind

  • They’re teaching you. Customers are bringing trends, features, or tools to the table that you’ve yet to explore.
  • You’re no longer in the room. Strategic decisions are being made without your input.
  • Your offering is outdated. While you’re pitching basics, they’re asking about low-code, AI, and streamlining operations.

How to Keep Up and Stay Ahead

You don’t need to become a tech visionary overnight. But you do need to be intentional about staying relevant.

  1. Make Time for Learning

Learning can’t be an afterthought. Block time weekly to upskill across tech trends that matter to your clients.

  1. Create Peer Learning Loops

Hold short weekly sessions where team members share trends, tools, or lessons from the field. Practical, real-world knowledge compounds.

  1. Apply Learning in Real Time

At the start of each project, ask: What new idea or tool could elevate this delivery? Look for chances to stretch value even in small ways.

  1. Show Customers You’re Evolving

Share insights regularly through quick emails, check-in segments, or “what’s new” sessions. Stay visible and valuable.

  1. Close the YouTube Gap

Your customers are already learning online. Don’t get left behind. Curate what’s trending and translate it into real value for their world.

Mindset Shifts That Matter

  • Solve problems, don’t just sell tech. Understand where your customers are stuck and lead them out.
  • Be the guide, not the guru. You don’t need all the answers, just the ability to connect the right dots.
  • Move fast and stay flexible. A rough idea implemented today beats a perfect one that’s six months too late.

Final Thought: Stay in Motion

The age of the passive provider is over. Your customers are evolving, whether you are or not. They want proactive partners who bring insight, agility, and relevance to the table.

You don’t need to chase every trend or outshine the competition. You just need to stay aligned, stay curious and keep moving.

Because in this game, staying still is the quickest way to be left behind.
