Microsoft has revealed that a networking issue has caused the Microsoft 365 outage today, and expects the service to be restored shortly.
The vendor revealed midday Sydney time that it was “investigating an issue preventing access” to Microsoft 365 services. CRN understands Office Admin portal, Teams and Sharepoint were affected, as well as Visual Studio and DevOps.
The issue stemmed from a recent networking update, which Microsoft said it reverted and has since seen initial signs of recovery.
We've identified and reverted a networking build that caused user traffic from the internet to Microsoft 365 services to intermittently fail, and are seeing early signs of recovery. Refer to https://t.co/AEUj8uAGXl for additional details, or MO196220 in the admin dashboard.

Microsoft’s Office status page offered a little more detail.
“We've identified that a recent networking update may have caused user traffic coming from the internet to fail intermittently before reaching Microsoft 365 services,” it read at the time of writing.
“We've reverted this update and are seeing some initial signs of mitigation. We're continuing to validate the cause of the problem while we monitor the environment for service recovery.”
Microsoft said the outage hit Microsoft 365 admin center, Exchange Online, SharePoint Online, Office Online, Microsoft Teams, Skype for Business, and Yammer.
A reader told CRN that Microsoft Teams UCaaS appears to be unaffected despite Microsoft Teams showing it was off-line, meaning users are still able make and receive phone calls using Teams as the outage is ongoing.
