LG’s new look revealed

Number three smartphone maker, Korea’s LG, is looking to a design renaissance and a new phone naming scheme in a bid to take the competition to market leader Samsung.

The next flagship device for LG will be known as the G2. The idea is to make the letter 'G' synonymous with high-end smartphone design, said an LG executive.

Although the company hasn’t released specs for the G2, the Asia One website reports the device will come with a Qualcomm 2.3Ghz Snapdragon processor, a 5.2 inch display and a 13 megapixel rear-facing camera. LG hasn’t said if the phone runs on LTE “4G” networks, however it’s highly likely to do so in order to remain competitive.

The technical specifications of the G2 are somewhat reminiscent of Samsung’s recent Galaxy S4. Samsung claims to have sold over 20 million S4s since the launch of the device.

Little is known about the physical design of the G2, with reports stating the device is buttonless. The G2 will run a version of Android, but again it’s not clear whether it will be the latest release of Google’s operating system, Jellybean, or an earlier iteration.

Rivals Samsung and HTC also “skin” their versions of Android, providing custom functionality for the operating system. Until recently the only “clean” Android smartphones have been Google’s own Nexus line. That situation has changed in recent times, with clean Android versions of the Samsung Galaxy S4 and HTC’s flagship One phone.
