LCD dominates monitor market

By on

Lower prices have helped push LCD ahead of CRT as the preferred choice of display technology in Australia, according to figures from industry analyst IDC.

"The 2004 monitor market saw a pronounced migration to the LCD form factor, with six out of every 10 monitors shipped being an LCD display,” said Mercie Clement, analyst for PC hardware at IDC.

Decreasing costs and longer life-span have driven LCD uptake, which is expected to further cannibalise the already waning CRT market, according to Clement.

The analyst expects LCD growth to continue, peaking in 2005 as vendors focus on high-end models and OEM vendors bundle entry-level LCD displays with new PCs.

Clement said that by 2006 LCD displays would have reached mainstream volume, after which sales are expected to decline.
