Kogan counts Apple chickens early

Online retailer Kogan has jumped the gun on the release of an Apple iPhone 5, last night encouraging customers via Twitter and its website to sign up as priority customers to receive the non-existent smartphone at ‘the world’s best price’.

In yesterday’s lead up to Apple’s much-discussed announcement for a new version of its popular iPhone, Kogan founder Ruslan Kogan took to Twitter, urging followers to sign up and ‘skip the queues’ for the new device he named as the iPhone 5. The unveiling of Apple’s fifth-generation iPhone 4S, an upgrade of the company’s 2010 iPhone 4, left Kogan with egg on his face and an empty promise to customers. The invitation to pre-order the iPhone 5 was still available at 11:20am today.

Apple’s latest smartphone keeps the previous generation’s shape and basic design but includes a faster processor, eight-megapixel camera and a voice command assistant feature.

The phone will arrive in Australia on October 14, sporting the latest version of Apple’s operating system iOS 5, which will be available in Australia for other Apple devices two days prior.

Kogan did not respond to requests for comment by the time of publication.
