In conjunction with the Association of Independent Schools NSW (AIS), ISONet aims to give independent schools access to secure high quality broadband data and secure sharing of education resources within the network.
The independent school sector - separate to the Government and Catholic system - is made up of different groups or systems of schools. According to AIS NSW website, 15 percent of enrolled students in NSW attend independent schools.
Frank Brooks, director of ICT for AIS NSW said a new focus on IT and education has emerged since the new Australian government came into power.
However, the additional $1 billion funding earmarked over next four years for enhancing IT in schools has a number of challenges, he said.
"There is a potential for [schools] to get higher quality internet access," Brooks said. "With that comes the need for greater security. Security must become a top priority for school ICT managers.”
ISONet also provides access to video conferencing; online communication across great distances; e-books if they’re unavailable at the school and access to news and current affairs.
“ISONet benefits many people within the school organisation. IT administrators and staff have greater control over the school’s technology, allowing them to concentrate on complex security and filtering tasks to focus on supporting teachers and students to use technology effectively,” Brooks said.
Carlo Minassian, founder and CEO of Earthwave said: “The rise in computer usage and increase in classroom activity performed on the Web can be directly correlated with the increase in risk of exposure to malware and other harmful material.”
