Defence establishes group to fight in the digital age

The Australian Defence Force said it has established a new group with increased focus on delivering information and communications technology capability to ensure the country's military is ready to fight in the digital age.

Formerly known as the Chief Information Officer Group, the organisation had five divisions, responsible for a range of tasks such as ICT strategy and delivery, operations and reform.

Now known as the Defence Digital Group, the organisation has been restructured to take a strategy-led approach to shaping, delivering and sustaining the Defence ICT landscape in a faster and more agile way.

The DDG looks set to organise Defence ICT with military and enterprise in their own divisions.

ICT underpins Defence preparedness during rapid technological change that has accelerated military modernisation in the region, and reduced Australia's strategic warning time.

Defence said this its technologies must focus on enhancing its warfighting capability and increasing resilience.

“The Defence Strategic Review is a call for immediate action in light of our changing strategic circumstances," said chief information officer Chris Crozier.

“A genuine partnership between the government, industry and unions will be critical to growing Australia’s defence industry and speeding up the acquisition of vital defence capabilities," Crozier added.

“We will be working closely with our partners from across the Defence ecosystem to ensure our ICT strategy and approach is well understood, and that we are attracting the best skills and capabilities from across the nation to support the Defence mission," he said.
