The Commonwealth Bank has poured cold water on claims its British website was hacked saying customer data was safe and its systems were not breached.
A data cache of usernames, emails and MD5 encrypted passwords were posted to an online clipboard by a hacktivist group claiming to have breached commbankuk.co.uk.
Commonwealth Bank spokesman Steve Batten said the bank conducted a "thorough investigation" which confirmed the claims were chaff.
"No Commonwealth Bank systems have been hacked and no customer data has been compromised," Batten said.
"Commonwealth Bank customer information is safe and secure."
A cursory check on website PwnedList of the email addresses listed in the cache against found many were compromised in July 2011.
Hacker groups regularly compiled databases with credentials previously exposed on the internet as evidence of purported new data breaches.
