Cisco cuts 1300 jobs

Cisco says it will shed a further 1300 jobs in an ongoing attempt to net $US1 billion in savings.

The workforce reduction is Cisco's second since last year, when it announced plans to cut 10 percent of its 65,000-strong workforce.

"We are performing a focused set of limited restructurings that will collectively impact approximately 2 percent of our global employee population," the company said in an emailed statement.

"These actions .. are part of a continuous process of simplifying the company, as well as assessing the economic environment in certain parts of the world."

Cisco did not specify which business units would be affected.

Chief executive John Chambers launched a fluid restructuring plan last year to cut expenses by $1 billion in an effort to make the company leaner and more efficient. Cisco cut its head count by around 6500, mostly through layoffs and early retiurement packages.
