BlackBerry has taken the next step in its transformation by entering the communications platform-as-a-service market.
The Canada-headquartered company has introduced a software development kit called BBM Enterprise.
BBM Enterprise will allow developers to integrate secure messaging, voice and video capabilities into applications and services, according to BlackBerry.
BlackBerry said this would make it competitive with other cloud communications platforms.
This new release has more than 80 security certifications and approvals, which BlackBerry said reflected its security and encryption credentials.
“We are constantly innovating and looking for ways to leverage our legacy and expertise in secure mobility to solve real business problems,” chief operating officer Marty Beard said.
“We are opening up a new revenue stream for the company with a fully cloud-based communication service that is designed to help developers, ISVs, and enterprises meet the most demanding security and compliance requirements.”
Last September, BlackBerry announced that it would outsource the development and design of its smartphones. The following month, it launched its final smartphone.
