How much storage is enough? Last year we were impressed when Western Digital released the first 3TB internal PC hard drives. Now that upper limit looks set to increase for those dreaming of even more space for movies and music.
Reports claims that Samsung will soon announce hard drives with 1TB of capacity per platter. Engadget and others are reporting that this may mean the possibility of 4TB desktop hard drives. Estimations by vendors of how many videos drives hold vary from brand to brand and according to the type of calucation used, but based on the estimations used by Seagate for its drives, 4TB might equate to approximately 1,000 2-hour DVD quality movies. Mind you, these drives will reportedly run at 5,400RPM.
Laptops will also get larger capacities, with electronista reporting a 2.5in two-platter 1TB drive on the way from Samsung.
As we explained here, the rising capacity of hard drives has caused some headaches, with problems for older PCs running Windows XP. This month Seagate announced a new Barracuda XT 3TB drive with features that allow it to work more easily with XP machines.
If you're considering building a seriously impressive PC for movies and music, then keep an eye out for this.
