Hands on with Asus Eee Pad Transformer

Have you ever been typing away on your tablet's touchscreen and wished you had a proper keyboard? Conversely, have you ever been typing away on your netbook and wished you had a touchscreen? The Asus Eee Pad Transformer fulfills both these wishes: it's a two-in-one product that provides the portability and touch interface of a tablet with the keyboard and extended battery life of a netbook.

We got our hands on the Asus Eee Pad Transformer during the product's official launch yesterday. Check out the rest of the slideshow to read our first impressions...

Hands on with Asus Eee Pad Transformer

The Asus Eee Pad Transformer runs on Android's 3.0 Honeycomb O.S; the first operating system built specifically for tablets. Highlights include a 10.1in LED Backlight WXGA (1280x800) display with 10-finger multi-touch support, a Tegra 2 CPU, 1GB of RAM, up to 32GB of storage and a quoted battery life of 16 hours (when attached to the docking station.)

Connectivity is also solid, with HDMI, a MicroSD card reader, two USB ports and 802.11 b/g/n wireless.

As its name implies, the $799 Asus Eee Pad Transformer can 'transform' from a netbook into a 10in tablet. You simply remove the screen from the keyboard dock and presto!: you have a wannabe iPad killer. Asus is also selling the tablet separately, for an RRP of $599. This makes it one of the cheapest 10in tablets on the market.

When removed from the keyboard dock, the Asus Eee Pad Transformer resembles a regular 10.1in tablet.

One of the first things we noticed about the Eee Pad Transformer is its weight. It's significantly heavier than the average 10in netbook, with the tablet alone weighing 680g.

The Eee Pad Transformer docking station is around the same size as an average netbook's keyboard. The keys are reasonably large and proved responsive during typing.

The Asus Eee Pad Transformer boasts a 10.1in LED Backlight WXGA display with a native resolution of 1280x800. The touch screen managed to impress us during handling; it's bright, responsive and has good viewing angles.

The display is constructed of scratch-resistant Gorilla glass - one of the press photos shown at the event showed a screwdriver failing to leave a mark on the screen. As always, we'd take these claims with a grain of salt.

All of the 200,000+ apps available at the Android Marketplace are available for the Eee Pad Transformer - including this fun piano application. We also tried out a handful of games, all of which looked fantastic on the 1280x800 display.

We were fairly impressed with the Asus Eee Pad Transformer's build quality: the back has a scaled finish similar to the Galaxy Tab 10.1v, while the keyboard dock is coloured bronze. We think the design strikes a nice balance between style and business-like functionality.

The Eee Pad detaches from the keyboard dock via a sliding lock mechanism. We found it slightly fiddly at first, but soon got used to it.

During our 'transforming' tests, the Eee Pad Transformer exhibited a few hiccups. Several running apps closed down automatically whenever the slate was removed from or reattached to the keyboard dock. We imagine this would be annoying if you were halfway through an Angry Birds level, for example.

We queried Asus about this, who claimed it may have been a fault with the engineering sample. (In any event, it's no biggie - just make sure you save any files or apps before transforming the device.)

Unlike the Apple iPad 2, the Eee Pad Transformer sports a halfway decent 5-megapixel rear-facing camera. It uses an Android Honeycomb camera interface that is more or less identical to the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1.

The photo capture button is located to the right of the screen within easy reach of the thumb. Other popular functions (including colour filters, white balance and an 8x digital zoom) are just a quick fingertap away. As expected, the 10in display provides an excellent view of your subject and the surrounding scenery. (A 1.2MP front camera is also included for video chats and the like.)

All in all, we were fairly impressed with the Asus Eee Pad Transformer during our brief hands-on demo. Its tablet credentials are easily the match for other Android offerings, while the addition of a keyboard is sure to be appreciated by the vast majority of users.

The Asus Eee Pad Transformer is available in Australia from today. Pricing starts at $599 (for the 16GB standalone slate), while the 32GB model with keyboard dock costs $799.
