In pictures: Inside NextDC's M1 data centre

A peek inside the flagship centre.

The $130 million, 17,500 square metre facility in South Melbourne is NextDC's flagship data centre. It was officially launched this week, ahead of installation of customer equipment from next week.

One of four weighted man-traps - each installed at a $250,000 cost - that manage access to the data centre as a whole.

Each man-trap requires two-factor authentication - biometrics plus security clearance card - to enter.

NextDC was putting the last touches to its facility as it headed toward official launch.

NextDC deputy chairman Bevan Slattery shows Senator Stephen Conroy and other official guests through the data centre, which includes six data halls over two floors.

The facility is raised floor with overhead cabling and has a hot-aisle containment system. The blue side is the 'cool' side.

Red is hot.

Each rack has redundant power from two different sources, colour-coded for easy identification.

The other power feed inside the first data hall.

Glass tiles are interspersed throughout the facility, allowing engineers and repairmen to more easily access key pipes and cables in the sub-floor plenum.

The wiring includes specific cut-off points from the building's main cooling area in an attempt to court interest from potential high-performance computing clients.

The M1 facility is powered by diesel rotary uninterruptible power supplies (DRUPS) from Piller. A total 13 such generators are planned for the facility.

The building is built for an IT load of 12 megawatts and is expected to draw down 20 megawatts from the power grid at peak load. NextDC is hoping to cut down its grid requirements by installing two 2MW tri-generation power generators next year.

Slattery said he specifically chose alarm lights reminiscent of naval ships.

Six of the diesel rotary uninterruptible power supply (DRUPS) units have been installed, with the other seven to be put in place over the coming months. In the event of a power cut, it would take 72,000 litres of diesel fuel to run the generators for 24 hours, in addition to 750,000 litres of water required for the chillers.

Launched alongside the unveiling of the M1 facility is NextDC's OneDC app for iOS devices. It allows facility customers to monitor and configure access to their racks and log access.

The app can remotely unlock individual rack doors. Users are given 30 seconds to physically open the doors once a remote command is given.

The app also provides power consumption and carbon footprint statistics per rack.
