In Pictures: tech highlights of IFA 2011

The IFA 2011 consumer electronics expo has just kicked off in Berlin, showcasing the best upcoming tech products from Sony, Panasonic, LG, Samsung, Pioneer and more. Here's an overview of some of the most exciting gadgets thus far.

Sony Tablet S

The Sony S boasts a 9.4in screen with a 1280x800 pixel resolution, weighs 598g (for the Wi-Fi version) and sports an unusual “asymmetric” design. It’s slightly thicker at one end than the other, angling the screen for more comfortable typing.

Inside, the S will use the same Nvidia Tegra 2 processor as every other Honeycomb tablet we’ve reviewed, and will come in 16GB and 32GB Wi-Fi variants, plus a 32GB 3G version later.

LW9800 Cinema 3D TV

LG has crammed all of its tricks into one flagship TV with the launch of the LW9800 at IFA this year. And we wouldn't expect anything less from a new LG TV than Cinema 3D with full HD 2D and 3D "flicker-free" pictures as well as 2D to 3D conversion. Inside you'll also find a host of IP TV apps thanks to LG SmartTV with built-in Wi-Fi.

The LW9800 sports a Nano Full LED screen so not only does LG reckon you'll get brighter and clearer pictures as a result, it also means the TV is just 26.4mm thick. You get seven pairs of cinema-style 3D glasses in the box plus you can choose from 47in and 55in screen sizes.

Panasonic HDC-Z10000 3D camcorder

3D is taking centre stage this year at IFA 2011 and Panasonic has kicked off with the twin-lens 2D and 3D shooting handheld HDC-Z10000 camcorder. The HDC-Z10000 shoots full HD video using two 3MOS 6.5MP sensors and gives you 10x optical zoom and 3D macro shooting for your money. Plus there's a glasses-free 3D LCD screen to view your handiwork on – a first for a Panasonic camera.

Invoxia NVX 610

The Invoxia NVX 610 is part VoIP phone, part teleconferencing tool and part iPhone/iPad dock. The rounded casing hides eight speaker drivers (four on the front and two on each side) that work in pairs to create a sonic 3D image. If you’re on a call to two people, it’ll put them at different sides. If you’re on the phone to one, it’ll create a more realistic image. There are also eight mics that pick up your voice from anywhere and can be used to cancel directional noise.

Philips SoundRing

Let's face it – speaker docks have the potential to be duller than a beige paint-lovers' convention. But not so the Philips SoundRing. Its striking donut-like appearance has been engineered to completely fill a room with its audio goodness. Philips tells us it's able to do this thanks to its central bass unit, four high-definition drivers – two front and two side facing – which send the sound in all directions. And with its rechargeable battery and charging cradle you'll be able to enjoy up to five hours of your music anywhere before it needs a battery boost.

Sony Tablet P

The Sony Tablet P is a novel dual-screen 'folding' 5.5in tablet that is small enough to slip in your pocket. It’s light and trim, not unlike a case for a slightly oversized pair of specs. It is particularly well suited for gaming, with the familiar PlayStation controls appearing on the secondary display.

Sony’s head-mounted visor might look like a Robocop accessory, but it packs in a lot more tech than the 1987 crime-fighter could ever have hoped to wield. Boasting a pixel-packing 1280x720px 0.7in OLED panel for each eye, the headset is able to offer a 3D experience similar to viewing a gargantuan 750in screen from a distance of 20m. The setup should remove the pesky 'eyestrain' associated with the current active shutter glasses and the built in 5.1 surround sound should happily ensure your isolation from the real world.

The included processing unit also accepts connections from Blu-ray players, PS3s and other input devices, ensuring that lack of content will never be a problem. The only downside is the wallet-busting US$800 asking price.

Pioneer BDP-140

The BDP-140 is the flagship model in a new lineup of Pioneer Blu-ray players launching at IFA this week. The new model plays 3D Blu-ray discs, as well as giving users access to BD Live content, YouTube access and Picasa albums. It'll hook up to your home network via Ethernet or optional Wi-Fi adapter

On top of that, it's controllable via the iControlSV2 mobile app, along with a host of Pioneer's recent AV receivers. Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio are supported, and as it's DLNA certified, it should easily pick up your PC or media server to display your snaps and vids on your TV.

Viera Connect

Panasonic was on hand to unveil its new smart TV system – Viera Connect. Announced earlier in the year, Connect means thousands of apps, including Skype and Twitter on your big screen via Viera Connect Market. The new service will also let you go shopping for apps and even physical products armed with your Viera remote.

In terms of hardware, we were treated to the latest models in its Viera 3D LED LCD TV range and four new models – the VT30, GT30, ST30 and G30 – were added to its series of Plasmas. We also got details of its third-gen active shutter 3D glasses, the TY-EW3D3s weighing in at just 26g.

Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc S

Sony Ericsson has revealed the Xperia Arc as the latest in a long list of devices to get an 'S' slapped onto the end of its name. As you would expect, the extra letter comes with numerous bumps in features – notably a 1.4GHz processor and an Exmor R sensor with a 2D to 3D conversion panorama mode. No exact release date or pricing info as yet – though a global release is pencilled in for some time in October.

LG PZ850T Pentouch 3D TV

Normally we wouldn't advise jabbing a pen at an eye-wateringly expensive plasma TV screen, but all that could be about to change with LG's new PZ850T Pentouch 3D TV. Like the LW980T, the plasma model also converts 2D content to 3D and comes with one pair of active shutter 3D glasses for free.

The internet-connected PZ850T will come in 50in and 60in models, making plenty of room for LG's Sketch book, Photo editor and Family diary Pentouch functions plus jabby pen damage will be kept to a minimum with a protective skin over the screen. Just try not to mix up the pens, eh?

Toshiba A100

Toshiba had its new AT200 (Excite) tablet on show, which measures in at a wafer thin 7.7mm and weighs just 558g. The device will have Honeycomb out of the gate and features a 10.1in 1280x800 screen and up to 64GB of storage, with a reported battery life of 8 hours.

The 1.4GHz dual core processor and 1GB of RAM should keep things running smoothly while a 5MP rear camera and front-facing video conferencing camera take care of imaging desires. Connections include MicroSD, Micro USB and a Micro HDMI port which allows TV connectivity, though fans of the newly released AT100 tablet’s USB port will be disappointed by its omission.

Fujifilm X10

Like its X100 sibling, the Fujifilm X10 has a look that screams retro chic. Fujifilm's latest compact features a large 2/3in 12MP EXR-CMOS sensor, high-def F2.0 wide-angle and F2.8 telephoto, metal barrel Fujinon lens and optical viewfinder. The biggest similarity to the X100 is the use of manual knobs and dials on its control deck which takes care of aperture, shutter speed, exposure compensation, power and zoom. It also packs in 4x manual zoom functionality (28-112mm equivalent).

Interestingly, the manual zoom lens doubles up as an on/off switch, ensuring you're always ready to get those all important shots. And with a claimed 0.01 shutter release time lag, you'll have have no excuses for missing those fleeting shots.

Sony Android Walkman prototype

This Sony Android Walkman prototype was spotted backstage at Sony's IFA stand. The 4.3in Android Walkman you see here is so new it doesn’t even have a name, or any specifications. In terms of build feel and style, the anonymous device reminds us a lot of Sony Ericsson’s Xperia Arc.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7

The Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 might still be languishing in court rooms around the world, but that didn't stopped Samsung from unleashing more tablets at IFA, fronted by the 7.7. Galaxy Tab 7.7. The beautiful silver unibody on this 7.7in tablet is the lightweight home to 1.4Ghz dual core that pumps out a beautiful Super AMOLED Plus display. Despite being just 7.89mm thin and almost half the weight of an iPad 2 at only 335g, Samsung has managed to house a MicroSD expansion slot, 3MP and 2MP snappers and 4G LTE speeds for those that can get them. It runs on Android Honeycomb 3.2.

Sharp 'Super Hi-Vision' LCD TV

If you find yourself looking at your run of the mill HD TV and wonder why it can't be 16x clearer, make friends with Sharp who's just announced an 8K4K LCD TV – so named after its ridiculous 7680x4320 pixel resolution. Compare that to regular HD which gives you a measly 1920x1080 display and you've got the first ever TV with Super Hi-Vision (or Ultra High Definition Television).

Sharp is still batting around the prototype at this stage so we'll keep you informed as to when you can get one of these 82 inchers on your wall. But this is what TV will look like give or take a few years, and take it from us – it looks good.

Samsung Galaxy Note

Upon first glance, Samsung’s newly revealed Galaxy Note looks like the result of a vigorous copulation between a Galaxy Tab and S II smartphone. Boasting a gargantuan 5.3in 1200x800 Super AMOLED display, a 1.4Ghz dual core processor, 16/32GB of storage and an 8MP and 2MP camera, this 9.65mm thick Gingerbread-running powerhouse also features a stowaway pen for writing and sketching.

Sammy hopes that this pen will move beyond the realms of a gimmicky accessory by including an S Memo app for note taking the old fashioned way. No word on release or pricing as of yet, so excuse us while we go and lie down for a moment – our heads are still swimming from the spec overload.
