What's hot in cloud? We ask Cloudten Industries
Richard Tomkison

Who are your main cloud vendor partners?

We specialise in the design, delivery and support of cloud-based solutions. Our core competencies include infrastructure projects, DevOps and cloud security. We are recognised consulting partners of the two leading cloud service providers: Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure.

When did your company first get involved in this area?

We were established in mid-2014 by Malcolm Duncanson and myself, after recognising that there was a growing market for specialist cloud skills in Australia. The AWS Sydney region was still quite young and Microsoft still had not officially opened its Austra close to 20 years.

Which certifications and/or credentials do you have that apply to cloud?

AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Professional and Associate; AWS Certified SysOps Engineer – Associate, Microsoft Certified Specialist – Azure Infrastructure Solutions and Office 365 Identities and Requirements. With AWS, we are on the cusp of attaining Advanced Partner status.

Have you heard of any cool or interesting recent developments in the cloud space?

The speed at which AWS and Azure release new services and enhancements to existing ones is pretty incredible. However, I would have to say that during 2015, the advancement of V-to-V and P-to-V tooling has had the biggest impact on us as it has made it a lot easier to migrate legacy workloads and applications. Zerto, AppZero and Zaptz all offer great products in this space.

Can you tell us about a recent cloud deployment you have done?

We are currently working on a challenging project that involves the migration of a lot of legacy systems and applications.

What is driving customers’ cloud projects?

It depends on the size and type of the company. Start-up companies fall into the ‘born in the cloud’ category. As technology is not their core business, they have no interest in managing their own infrastructure. We have other larger customers who also seem to be ready and willing to embrace all aspects of the cloud.

Cloud is...

Not just about shifting your IT workloads into data centres managed by someone else. To truly leverage the benefits that cloud computing provides, embrace the agile tools and processes that have developed around it.
