Public cloud partnering: Base2Services
Aaron Walker, Base2Services

We speak with Aaron Walker, technology director, Base2Services.

What public cloud brands and attached services do you specialise in?

Amazon Web Services is our primary vendor. We provide DevOps as a managed service to teams and businesses that want to run cloud applications. We work closely with developers and in-house architects to guide our customers’ teams to leverage the benefits of the cloud and make their development and operations faster, leaner and agile.

When did your company first get involved in this area?

We started with public cloud in 2006 when Base2Services became the first Australian company to launch a managed AWS offering. We have 10 years’ experience in public cloud services with many firsts in the market. We started our DevOps competency back in 2005.

What are your credentials in this area?

I am an AWS-certified APN Cloud Warrior. Our staff hold certifications such as AWS Certified Solution Architects (Associate and Professional), Developers and SysOps Administrators. Base2Services is Australia’s first AWS Advanced Consulting Partner (2012).

Have you heard about any cool developments recently?

We find increased demand around serverless technologies and application architecture.
We are driving a shift from using services such as AWS API Gateway and Lambda from an infrastructure automation-focused technology to using it as a core microservices platform.

Can you tell us about a recent deployment you have done?

We focus solely on public cloud deployments and could reference many customers. A more recent deployment is carsales.com. We built the automation to help Carsales speed up
the development and deployment for its international sites.

What is driving customers’ public cloud projects?

Cloud technologies are an enabler for DevOps practices. This is the key reason our customers leverage public cloud. It assists with the ability to automate environment builds, scaling and management. By embracing DevOps and public cloud, customers want to increase the speed of development and the ability to adapt more quickly to change.

Public cloud is…?

A set of technology resources that are easily accessed via public channels – that is, the internet. It is an enabler for improved processes that have the ability to remove human interaction from the management of environments and application backbones.
