Yet another Microsoft scam has emerged in the form of a phishing email designed to secure banking and other personal information from victims promised a prize pool of €900,000 ($A1.2 million).
CRN sighted an email from fraudsters encouraging recipients to hand over their personal information to collect winnings earned from a “MCROSOFT ONLINE CASH SPLASH PROMO DRAW”.
The scam email encouraged recipients to contact a Mateus Alfonso at an unnamed “Finance security/ Vaulting company” in the West African Republic of Benin, claiming ten winners were drawn from nine hundred million worldwide as part of an international promotions program in conjunction with “Face Book Network”. It asked the recipient to fill out a form detailing personal information as well as select their preferred payment option.
The scam follows a fraudulent cold calling operation targeting Windows users earlier this year, which Microsoft and investigators subsequently linked to one of the company's partners in India.
Calls to Microsoft for more information on the lastest scam were not returned by the time of publication.
