Acer to enter comms market with hybrid PBX and touchscreen deskphone

Acer is taking its first step into corporate unified communications with the planned release of a touchscreen deskphone and hybrid PBX for traditional and IP telephony.

The abPBX Plus platform platform, which spans three models for small, medium and large enterprises, offers hybrid support for both traditional PBX as well as IP telephony, both voice and video. It provides switchboard/switch functionality, instant messaging, and uses smartphones as virtual extensions.

The abPBX can connect to the internet via Ethernet or wi-fi and can integrate with smartphones.

Acer will also launch a deskphone that boasts a touchscreen panel taken from Acer's tablet technology and runs a version of Android.

The technology is part of its Acer Octon division; last October, Acer announced the partnership with Octon, a 17-year-old company founded in Taiwan.

The abPBX Plus range sits alongside another new product range, Acer's private cloud hub, the abBeing One. Together the two devices represent the vendor's enterprise cloud strategy, which it has dubbed "C&C", standing for computing and communication.
