Telstra taps Microsoft partner to overhaul 370 stores

Telstra has tapped local Microsoft partner Engagis for a massive digital overhaul of the telco's retail networks.

During the National Retail Convention in New York, Microsoft announced that Telstra would roll out the Future Retail Environment (FRE) system developed by Engagis.

FRE was developed to merge customers' in-store experience with online purchasing. Customers can browse products in a physical Telstra store and scan them with an NFC card to complete the transaction online.

The system, which is based on Microsoft’s data visualisation tool PowerBI and Microsoft Azure, helps gauge customer’s interest in products at certain touchpoints throughout the store.

As part of the project, Engagis will also rollout between 5,000 and 6,000 Surface Pro 3 tablets to the 370 stores across Australia.

Changing from desktop PCs to tablets allows staff to search products, process payments and email reciepts to customers from anywhere in Telstra's stores without having to return to a dedicated POS system.

Engagis will also provide a number of other visual devices including digital video wall displays, tech bars and media fountains.

FRE has already been deployed in six Telstra stores, including the flagship customer centres in Sydney and Melbourne. The full rollout is expected to take approximately four years.

Based in Sydney, Engagis provides digital engagement solutions with customers such as Telstra, 7-Eleven and Target. The company employs more than 100 full-time employees in Australia and will employe another 200 technicians to complete the rollout.
