Integrator's training arm closed after acquisition

Amcom has exited the external learning and accreditation market with the closure of its Education division.

The department previously provided training in Microsoft Office, technical standards such as ITIL and Prince2 as well as various certification programs.

Amcom chief financial officer David Hinton said there were a number of reason for the exit, including the number of other specialist IT training firms in the market.

The company inherited the education division through its $15 million acquisition of L7 Solutions in August 2012.

Amcom retained the division's staff by transforming them into its Amcom Career Development Centre (ACDC), which trains Amcom's internal staff.

"All of those skills and knowledge are being deployed internally to motivate staff and it's also great for career opportunities. We see it as a way to promote Amcom as an employer of choice," Hinton said.

"It was launched about a month ago," Hinton added.

Aggressive growth

Hinton said that Amcom has continued to grow, having posted a net profit after tax greater than 20 percent for 11 straight years.

Strong demand in data services led to the company acquiring aCure Technology for $14.3 million, which almost doubled its data centre footprint in Perth, from four to seven.

Hinton said Amcom invested "three to four million" in IT infrastructure, and that it anticipates it will have to continue investing more money in an effort to keep up with the demand.

The company is expanding its focus by offering additional services.

"The data network is our core business. Hosted telephony is something we're focussed on. It's at the early adoption stage in Australia.

"Cisco has only launched this product in the Australian market and we're one of the very few telcos who can deliver its hosted collaboration system," he said.

Amcom declared sales revenue of $157.7 million in FY12, up 16 percent compared with the year before. The company has 360 employees in offices located in Western Australia, New South Wales, South Australia, Victoria, Queensland and the Northern Territory.
