While this isn’t the final retail box – Motorola was quick to point out that it should have more Telstra branding – the blue tick on the lower right is definitely meant to be there. The Defy is the first Android phone in Australia to get Telstra’s Blue Tick for rural and regional coverage.
Inside the box it’s all about the Defy – or DEFY, as Motorola are calling it. The handset is a surprisingly light 118g and only 59x107x13.2mm in size.
Nothing too unusual in the box – just the usual Micro USB charger and 240v plug adaptor.
The Defy features a 3.7in WVGA Corning Gorilla Glass screen for added scratch resistance. The processor is 800MHz and there’s 512MB of RAM, with 2GB of on board memory and support for up to 32GB via MicroSD.
Camera-wise, it’s 5MP with an LED flash, but video is only 640x480, a bit disappoint for a device that bills itself as the fun phone for fun people on the go.
The Defy’s big drawcard is its ruggedisation. Water resistant (definitely not water proof, however) and dust proof, the phone also has plus to keep the Micro USB and headphone ports cover when they’re not in use.
The Defy is remarkably easy to open, thanks to a clearly labelled lock switch – a nice change from the current trends of making phones harder to crack than the enigma code. The SIM and MicroSD slot in under the 1540mAh battery.
The Defy runs Android 2.1 with Motorola’s own MOTOBLUR skin, the 1.5 version. Motorola spokespeople were unable to comment on if or when FroYo would be made available for the Defy.
