Telstra finally scraps 1800 mobile plans, replaces with just 20

Telstra has made good on its promise to scrap its 1800 consumer and small business mobile plans in favour of just 20 (or 19, depending on who you ask).

From today, Australia’s biggest telco will also do away with lock-in contracts across all of its mobile plans, claiming to be the first Aussie to do so.

Telstra also removed excess data fees, meaning if customers go over their limit, they will be shaped down to 1.5Mbps download speeds. But with all Telstra contracts billing month-to-month, customers will be able to change their plan at least once per month without penalty. There is a limit though. Customers on Telstra’s largest mobile data plan ($100 a month for 150GB) won’t have any option to increase their limit any higher than that once they go over.

Each plan also comes with 24 or 36-month device payment options, or customers can bring their own device. Much like its home broadband plans, Telstra will sell additional services like new devices or streaming services as add-ons to their mobile plan. Plans all come with unlimited standard national calls and texts as well.

Here are all the new plans:

Eagle-eyed readers might have noticed there are only 19 plans so far, despite advertising 20. Telstra assured us that there is one more plan to be added to the list, which will be finalised in the coming months.

Telstra also explained how access to its 5G network will work with the new plans.

For customers that have a 5G compatible device already, access to the network will be free during a trial period until 30 June 2020. After that, customers with small and medium plans will have to fork out another $15 a month for 5G, while large and extra large customers will get access for free.

Telstra announced plans to overhaul its mobile plans last year as part of the T22 strategy, which includes improving customer experience across the board as it looks to recoup $3 billion in earnings from the completion of the NBN.

“Customers expect to be able to personalise their experiences and only pay for what they want or need,” said chief executive Andy Penn.

“They also want to be able to change their mind month-to-month as their individual needs change. I am extremely proud that Telstra now offers customers that flexibility, so they can tailor their plan to suit their lives.

“This might mean upgrading your mobile plan around school holidays, adding a sport package for footy finals season, adding international data for that overseas holiday or, for our business customers, scaling their plan with the peaks and flows of their business.”
