Each data centre is designed to hold eight modular lots of 36 racks. Each lot has its own power and cooling source and can be rolled out as needed.

The modular lots are being fabricated and assembled in Australia, McDonald said.

Each module takes about 2.5 weeks to install and go live.

Peer review of the design is being undertaken by A.G. Coombs, McDonald said.

Fibre access

McDonald said that access to fibre in regional and rural areas is a "consideration rather than an issue" for the company's plans.

He said that Sustain wanted to work with NBN Co and was not averse to paying "the last mile or last 10 kilometres" to get interconnects with NBN fibre.

"Because we're saving such a lot on power, there's the incentive for us to pay the extra 5-6km to lay the communications down," he said.

The costs could also be offset by leasing roof space of the data centre to carriers to install mobile telecommunications towers.

McDonald said discussions with Vodafone and Optus were ongoing on this option.

McDonald co-founded Sustain Data Centres with Matt Neil, a former IBM architect who has taken the role of chief information officer at the data centre builder.

Planning has been underway for at least a year.
