Chinese electronics firm Oppo has announced two steps in its efforts to break into the Australian market: a budget smartphone aimed at selfie-savvy consumers and a nationwide partnership with The Good Guys.
Priced at $448, the A77 smartphone is Oppo's attempt at enticing the Instagram crowd. Its key features are rear-facing 13MP and front-facing 16MP cameras, the latter of which features a 1/3-inch sensor and F2.0 aperture.
Software enhancements further boast the cameras’ abilities – one feature, called Beautify 4.0, “helps users snap naturally flawless selfies”.
A ‘palm shutter’ feature allows users to activate an automatic shutter countdown by waving a hand in front of the front-facing camera. An artificial ‘bokeh’ filter is sure to attract interest.
“We know a picture is worth a thousand words, so we want to give our customers the best technology to tell their story,” says Oppo Australia executive director Michael Tran. “What we’ve managed to pack inside this phone, at the price point it will retail at, is pretty exceptional.”
Elsewhere on the spec sheet, the A77 sports an octo-core 64-bit processor and 4GB of RAM powering its 5.5-inch display. Onboard storage is decent at 64GB, and it’s expandable to 128GB via the smartphone’s triple SIM tray.
Alongside the announcement of the A77 comes news that Oppo has signed a national retail agreement with The Good Guys. The partnership will see Oppo's line of smartphones stocked in more than 100 stores across Australia from 17 July.
“We’re delighted to partner with Oppo,” says John Milonas, mobile buyer at The Good Guys. “Our customers are always looking for quality for less, and OPPO is an industry leader when it comes to smartphone technology and affordability.”
In September 2016, The Good Guys was acquired by JB Hi-Fi for $870 million.
Oppo is a division of multinational giant BBK Electronics, and began producing smartphones in 2008.
