MYOB is offering $50,000 to small retailers and $25,000 to their customers as part of the Shop Small campaign that hits Australia in November.
Shop Small encourages people to support their local small businesses. MYOB chief executive Tim Reed said "we hope to inspire millions of Australians to support our local operators and make November the biggest small business shopping month of the year. "
The idea comes from American Express. The major backers in Australia are Energy Australia, National Australia Bank, Virgin Australia, as well as MYOB.
MYOB has set up a dedicated web site for its participation in Shop Small, though the web site didn't seem to be online at the time of writing.
Five $10,000 business makeover grants are up for grabs by small business participants in Shop Small. To enter, owners need to to tell MYOB how a makeover will help them love their work, and take a ‘business selfie’ (a photo that encapsulates their business) to share via social media. One grant will be awarded during each of the four weeks of November, and the fifth will go to the most popular entry.
MYOB is also extending the free trial period for its Live accounting products from 30 days to three months for Shop Small participants that are not already its customers.
The other $25,000 will be spread among 100 customers. To enter, they need to spend at least $10 at a participating store and complete an entry form.
American Express customers may qualify for $10 statement credits if they register for the promotion and spend at least $20 at a participating business between 23 and 30 November. Up to five credits may be obtained this way.
Additional resources for small business operators - including free seminars in Sydney and Melbourne - are listed on the American Express site.
