Google adds real-time collaboration to Docs

Google has added new features to its Docs applications, promising improvements to the way documents are created and shared.

The company said that the 'editors' for both applications had graduated from Google Labs, and will be rolled out over the next two weeks.

"June is the month of graduations and new beginnings for millions of students around the world. The Google Docs team is also continually learning and we're happy to announce that the new documents and spreadsheets editors have both graduated," wrote Jeff Harris, a product manager at Google, in a blog post.

"Beginning today and rolling out over the next couple of weeks, all new documents will be created using the new documents editor. Docs already created using the older editor will remain there. We will be sharing more information on how to move those documents to the new version soon."

Google claimed that the new editors offer real-time collaboration, improvements to the way elements are imported, a new table of contents, a dictionary and the ability to search as you type.

Harris also discussed the latest incarnation of Google Spreadsheets which the firm has rolled out to all users from today. New features include formula highlighting, sheet dragging, faster scrolling and an editable formula bar.

Enterprise Apps customers should expect to see the editors rolled out by the end of June.
