ECAM is a cradle-to-grave program based on the ISO 14024 international standard for third party environmental labelling. The internationally recognised mark measures a product’s total environmental load which includes sustainability, waste and hazardous substances, and energy usage and efficiency through a product’s life cycle.

According to Adrian Johnson, general manager A/NZ Fuji Xerox Printers, the ECAM mark sends a strong signal to customers about the company's commitment to protecting the environment.

“What we’ve chosen to do is work with the Good Environmental Choice organisation and get over 20 of our products actually certified,” he said. “The reason we’ve done that is Good Environmental Choice is a program based on an ISO standard so it’s an international standards-based program.”

“Importantly for us, it’s the only lifecycle analysis-based eco label in Australia,” he added.

Tom Lewis, marketing manager A/NZ, Fuji Xerox Printers, said that the company is keen to send a clear green message to the channel.

“We’ve taken the position that we want to lead the market, we want that certification which is not confusing, not “greenwash,” he said.

“Our channel focus is about enablement, its enabling people to make an informed choice and to have something which is independently verifiable.”

According to Lewis, Fuji Xerox has had a long investment in sustainability across both its company and its product line.

“Fuji Xerox has been committed to sustainable practices for many years. We’ve had published environmental policies for about 10 years. We’ve been using triple bottom line reporting for at least the last five years,” he said.

In addition to the ECAM and existing ROHS compliance, Fuji Xerox Printers is also involved in recycling its products and consumables. Corporate customers can dispose of used printer cartridges in boxes provided and collected by the company. Printers that have reached the end of their lifecycle can be sent to the company for recycling while trade-ins and service parts are also recycled.
