Delinea tweaks platform to secure growing machine identity sprawl

Identity security provider Delinea has unveiled new capabilities for its cloud-native security platform.

These are aimed at helping organisations manage and protect the rapidly growing number of machine and artificial intelligence (AI) identities across enterprise networks.

The enhancements come as research from Delinea Labs estimates machine identities now outnumber human ones by 46 to 1 in typical enterprise environments, creating significant security challenges for organisations adopting AI technologies.

"Enterprises are entering an important phase where securing AI isn't just a technical challenge – it's a strategic imperative that enables the core business," Todd Thiemann, principal analyst at the Enterprise Strategy Group (ESG), said.

The company's expanded Machine and AI solution introduces several new components designed to bring greater control to AI system access and management, with some features available immediately and others planned for release later this year.

Among the immediate additions is Vault AI, which provides enterprise-grade vault capabilities to manage AI credential access and automate password rotation.

This is complemented by Secure AI, which enforces least privilege access controls on AI systems to limit potential damage from attacks or malfunctions.

"AI has become an integral driver of business transformation, and it's fuelling a population boom of machine identities that are reshaping the foundation of enterprise security," Phil Calvin, Delinea chief product officer, said.

The platform roadmap includes several additional capabilities scheduled for preview later this year. Discover AI, targeted for Q2 2025, will help organisations identify unsanctioned or "shadow" AI tools operating within their networks.

AI-Driven Authorisation, planned for the second half of 2025, will implement just-in-time access models for both human and machine identities.

Further out, the company is developing Identity AI, a native large-language model specifically designed for privileged account management.

This component aims to address compliance concerns in regulated industries by eliminating the need to share data with third-party AI services.

"The power and flexibility of agentic AI adds immense complexity to already challenging machine-to-machine authorisation," Calvin said.

The company positions its platform as uniquely designed for AI security challenges compared to other identity security solutions on the market, with a particular focus on addressing the rapidly growing problem of machine identity sprawl as organisations deploy more AI systems and tools.
