LG stopped by the CRN office today to give us a hands-on demo of its flagship LG Optimus G smartphone. The South Korean conglomerate is billing the device as the most powerful smartphone in the world. It will be available in Australia from March, exclusive to the Telstra 4G network.
The LG Optimus G is a 4.7in smartphone running on Android 4.1 Jellybean OS. It is powered by a quad-core Snapdragon S4 Pro processor and a whopping 2GB of RAM. Other chief specification include 4G LTE compatibility, an NFC chip and a 13MP camera. It comes with 32GB of inbuilt flash storage but lacks a microSD slot.
The LG Optimus G weighs approximately 145g and measures 8.5mm at its thickest point. The design and construction is vaguely reminiscent of the Samsung Galaxy S II.
LG said it had attempted to strike a balance between a slim design and a long battery life to suit the differing preference of international markets. The 2100mAh battery will last around a day during heavy use.
The LG Optimus G sports a black glass 'unibody' finish. This improves the sturdiness of the device, but also means you can't remove/replace the battery.
The phone's LCD screen is a cut above most rivals; it is capable of displaying 16,777,216 colors at a pixel density of 318 ppi.
The LG Optimus G comes with a 13MP camera. The camera comes with a range of advanced tools, including a handy burst shot mode. It is also capable of recording Full HD 1080p video at 30 frames per second (FPS).

One of Optimus G's biggest claims to fame is its 'UX' user interface -- a business-friendly UI that has been specifically optimised for 'cross-tasking' with demanding applications.
Some examples of cross-tasking cited by LG include a dual screen mode, live video zooming, a QuickMemo tool and the ability to project content wirelessly to an external display while using a different application on the phone.
The shiny black finish is a bit of a fingerprint magnet.

According to Counterpoint Research, LG has been catapulted to second position in the US mobile phone market, slotting between Samsung (at #1), and Apple, which has been knocked from its number two perch.
The LG Optimus G is expected to be available on a range of Telstra mobile phone business plans starting in March. Specific pricing had yet to be announced.
