Shark diving leads global "security superstar" to Datacom

An internationally renowned expert named a "Security Superstar" by CRN US in 2010 has moved to Perth to pursue his passion, with his services snapped up by an Australian security solutions provider.

In a coup for Datacom Technical Security Services, British database vulnerabilities guru David Litchfield was attracted to Western Australia by the local wildlife.

"I'm a keen shark diver and I was already travelling to Australia three to four times a year for that," Litchfield told CRN. "It was costing a fortune in flights so I looked for opportunities to permanently move."

The former Scottish junior athletics champion said he's performing forensics, security assessments, and code reviews for the Perth office of Datacom TSS.

Litchfield told CRN, "I'm here on a 457 visa but will apply for permanent residency as soon as I'm eligible."

When he's not swimming with deadly marine life, Litchfield is a regular speaker at tech security industry events and has authored the books Oracle Forensics, the Oracle Hacker's Handbook, and the Database Hacker's Handbook. He will speak at the AusCERT2014 conference on the Gold Coast in May.

Litchfield has also "developed security procedures for international conglomerates such as Microsoft, Amazon, Western Union, and Fujitsu," according to Datacom TSS.

"We are thrilled to welcome Mr Litchfield to the team, and excited that he has chosen to join our Western Australia division," said Kate McInnes, principal security consultant at the Perth branch of Datacom TSS.

Datacom TSS was founded in 2011 by former defence intelligence and information security employees. The company now boasts five offices in capital cities around the country and performs penetration testing and risk management for its clients.
