This week, we got our hands on Asus' Eee Pad Transformer Prime, which happens to be the first tablet to boast Nvidia's Tegra 3 quad-core processor and Android 4.0 (AKA Ice Cream Sandwich). The Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime comes in a snug, compact box that's barely any bigger than its 10.1 inch occupant.

The first thing that greets you is the laptop's lid. Or is it the tablet's back? In fact, it's both.

The sales package includes an AV power charger and USB cord. Additional cables, such as HDMI, need to be sourced separately.

The Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime is housed in a 'metallic spun' aluminum chassis that gives off plenty of shine without the associated fingerprints. The whorl-like 'Champagne Gold' finish has a premium feel, although it might be a little too shiny for conservative tastes.

This sliding lock mechanism keeps the tablet securely docked to its keyboard while in laptop mode.

Removing the Transformer Prime from its keyboard dock is a painless affair; just slide the locking mechanism to the side and pull upwards.

Pictured: the tablet's docking connectors. These needs to be lined up with the keyboard's hinge slot. It feels a bit fiddly at first, but quickly becomes second nature.

The Prime is surprisingly heavy for such a small device: when docked to the keyboard it weighs well over a kilogram. That said, its still lightweight enough to carry around in a briefcase or tucked under your arm. It measures just 8.3mm at its thickest point.

We were impressed with the keyboard dock's high level of build quality. The aluminum finish matches the tablet to a tee.

Having spent the past wmonth typing away on various Ultrabooks, the Transformer Prime's miniature keyboard took some getting used to. That said, the keys are perfectly responsive and the plethora of shortcuts are appreciated.

In addition to boosting the tablet's battery life by up to six hours (for an alleged total of 18), the keyboard dock comes with its own set of connectivity options; namely, a pair of USB ports and an SD memory card slot (pictured).

Pictured: Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime tablet in landscape mode. The tablet's display has a native resolution of 1280x800 pixels and is coated in durable Corning Gorilla glass. Asus claims that the screen is resistant to fingerprints, although we managed to make some noticeable smudges on it.

Pictured: Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime tablet in portrait mode. Asus claims the display has a 178 degree viewing angle, which means you can view it from side on. We put these claims to the test and found that the screen remains viewable from extreme angles.

The tablet comes with a Micro SD card slot. This means you can expand the Transformer Prime's capacity even if you leave the keyboard dock at home (the dock boasts its own memory card slot).

As mentioned, the Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime is the first tablet to come with Android 4.0; although you'll need to upgrade from Android 3.2 Honeycomb once you get it out of the box. In a departure from its previous OS, Google has made the mobile phone and tablet versions of Android 4.0 identical. The aim with Ice Cream Sandwich is to provide a seamless user experience across different platforms.

Unlike the iPad 2, the Eee Pad Transformer Prime hasn't skimped on the camera. It boasts an 8MP AF snapper with inbuilt LED flash, along with a front-facing 1.2-megapixel camera. The rear-facing camera is also capable of capturing 1080p Full HD video.

The Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime is available now with an RRP of $799 (32GB) and RRP$899 (64GB). Both models come bundled with the keyboard dock.
