Making a good impression in managed print

Jason Ganis, managing director, SmartPrint Fleet Management

What printing solutions do you sell?

SmartPrint is independent. Under our portfolio we manage and maintain all manufacturers. HP, Lexmark, Fuji Xerox, Konica Minolta, Canon, Ricoh, Kyocera, Toshiba, Océ, Oki, Memjet – we have accounts with them all.

What are your managed print credentials?

SmartPrint is one of the longest-running managed print services companies worldwide. We are members of the Managed Print Services Association, are Photizo members, hold an Australian credit licence and are government accredited. We even took out an international award for leaders in the field of MPS in the US.

When did your company first get involved in managed print?

We are quite unique as we only do MPS and started from scratch

Tell us about some cool printing technology

There’s Memjet’s ‘Waterfall’ technology that allows really affordable colour printing with full-bleed output, high-speed 60-70ppm full colour prints and photo-like reproduction. It's quite amazing to watch the print speed and quality. The other is 3D print and scan, utilising such materials as nylon, metal and even organic reproduction.

Memjet is a printer manufacturer, however, SmartPrint supply, manage and maintain its MPS solution for internal use. We have been managing its print requirements, service and logistics for several years now and most recently worked on a refresh. Initial mplementation and project roll out was three weeks.

What is driving customers towards managed print?

With the IT adoption of MS, cloud, hosted solutions, per seat opex and outsourcing, organizations are more accepting and inclined to opt for a managed print solution. By taking advantage of the benefits of an MPS company, the organization can outsource and wipe their hands of print issues, helpdesk, service and supplies.

Managed print is…?

MPS evolved from the photocopier and laser printer industries colliding and pushing into the same market segment. MPS optimises a customer's printer production via outsourcing the supply, management and maintenance of their print, copier, scan and fax fleets.

Michael Manton, group general manager, Digital Genius

What printing solutions do you sell?

We are Ricoh’s largest dealer nationally. HP also has an excellent offering around solutions in addition to its dominant printer market share. Our engagement normally leads to a mixed brand solution. Lexmark has been a partner of ours for more than nine years, allowing us to represent the top three brands for print.

What are your managed print credentials?

We hold many certifications in MPS. This means we are skilled and trained by the manufacturers in not just their print and hardware offerings, but also their software solutions and how they integrate into end users' networks. This is a critical part of our offering.

When did your company first get involved in managed print?

We have been in managed print for more than 20 years. There are many versions of what managed print means, but very few can deliver what Digital Genius can by way of full and comprehensive coverage of all print devices, automated supply, customer friendly billing and flexible agreements in addition to providing national support and service.

HP’s new enterprise-grade ink MFD, rated 70 pages per minute. This device will suit many users due to its surprisingly low running costs and ultra-high productivity while offering the range of HP solutions including direct SharePoint integration. Ink technology is not for everyone, but this little baby will certainly surprise many.

We recently helped a business with national coverage rationalise their entire print fleet by 24 percent. We installed more efficient devices that were better suited to the tasks of handling electronic documents. They now benefit from savings in excess of 30 percent per month, 15 percent fewer printed pages and 24 percent fewer devices.

What is driving customers towards managed print?

Users want a lot more out of the MFD experience than ever before. They are critical devices that perform critical tasks on a daily basis and in the competitive business world. Users need to be able to take advantage of the technology as and when it becomes available. MPS gives you that, in addition to full transparency of costs, rationalisation and ease of device management.

Managed print is…?

An intelligent decision

Michael Helder, group director, sales & marketing, Viatek

What printing solutions do you sell?

Viatek are accredited dealers of Fuji Xerox, HP and Lexmark print hardware and we also service everything we sell. This allows us to offer the right solution for the client. Our full range of software solutions addresses business process automation, document management, workflow and cost recovery.

What are your managed print credentials?

Viatek is accredited by Fuji Xerox, HP and Lexmark as a MPS provider. We also use FM Audit as a data collection agent to help fulfil the service. We have eight trained pre-sales analysts who work with our customers to develop integrated MPS and business process automation solutions.

When did your company first get involved in managed print?

Viatek has been leading with managed print services in regional areas since 2009. Many of our customers were getting tired of multiple suppliers, finance contracts, service contracts and no real strategy based around how documents and print moved within their businesses.

The biggest change we are seeing with MPS is the ability to include IT managed services and to truly help the customer with their whole environment. This might include simple helpdesk or desktop management, through to server infrastructure and business process automation. 3D printing is another new technology that is growing rapidly.

We have recently taken a customer through to the next stage of MPS from their previous provider. This customer is a large school that was aiming to reduce their printing by 50 percent in the next four years. We have implemented a 'print less' strategy using software to digitise and distribute documents to students’ iPads rather than class notes.

What is driving customers towards managed print?

The growth area for managed print is in the SMB space. As the paper and digital worlds collide, customers are looking for ways to help electronically streamline paper-based processes. It is increasingly relevant for smaller businesses who are wasting too much time and money on desktop printers and multiple suppliers.

Managed print is…?

More than just automating toner alerts! A successful managed print solution is end-to-end with focus on the discovery process, change management and implementation, and regular reporting on key success factors to allow for continuous improvement.

Brett Fitzgerald, director, ESP Print Management

What printing solutions do you sell?

We're a partner of Toshiba, Konica Minolta, Fuji Xerox, HP and Oki

What are your managed print credentials?

As well as those brands of printing solutions, we are also the partner with a number of software solutions such as Kofax and LaserFiche. We provide a complete package: we supply not only the printing solution, but are also moving towards innovative document and record management solutions and automated workflow solutions.

When did your company first get involved in managed print?

The business was formed about five years ago.

I have been in the print industry for 25 years and my business partner, Darren Bridge, has been in the industry for 15 years. Five years ago, we identified a real swing in the market towards a vendor-agnostic approach, rather than working for the one manufacturer.

ESP is the Australia & New Zealand distributor for a product called SecureJet, which is an enterprise-level secure print solution with key benefits in healthcare and large financial organisations. In a nutshell, it offers our clients security, traceability and mobility across complex print environments.

We do a lot of business with large training colleges, and assist them to be smarter about how and what they print. Some of these organisations have multiple brands and models from multiple manufacturers, so by not being aligned to any one vendor means we can easily take over the management of their environment.

What is driving customers towards managed print?

Any larger business going through growth and acquisition tends to acquire a lot of printers and photocopiers – and each device tends to have a different contract. Most of these clients don’t understand what their true costs are. We assist them in identifying their assets and what they are spending, then ask what they want to achieve.

Managed print is…?

It has a different meaning to different people. One of the big strengths of ESP is that we partner with a large number of vendors and we are vendor agnostic.
