VMware has emitted a major release of its Cloud Foundation product that managed service providers will appreciate, and which also shows a lot of love for HP Enterprise.
Cloud Foundation is VMware’s bundle of all the products it feels is needed to create a hybrid cloud. It therefore includes vSphere for compute virtualization, VSAN for software-defined storage and NSX for network virtualization.
VMware’s pitch for the product is that if you install it both on-prem and in a cloud, you’ll quickly get the ability to move workloads between the two locations. Whether or not you like the taste of that Kool-Aid, the product is pitched at MSPs – as reflected in the fact that IBM, OVH and Rackspace offer services based on Cloud Foundation.
And now those services are just a little easier to operate, as the new version 3.5 has added bulk host commissioning and de-commissioning, allowing operators to work on multiple hosts at the same time. There’s also better password management – just the thing for multitenant rigs – and new certificate replacement tools.
The love for HPE comes in the form of support for the Redfish standard’s Composability APIs. HPE Synergy is the first certified partner for that new feature, which will be appreciated as the company fancies itself a market leader with its composable hardware.
Version 3.5 also includes an eyebrow-raiser in the form of support for deployment of workload domains with NSX-T.
NSX-T is the version of the NSX that runs on hypervisors other than VMware’s. Allowing users to manage workloads with Cloud Foundation, but deploy them beyond a VMware stack, is a sign of VMware’s growing comprehension its users don’t rely on it alone for their cloud needs.
The new release is available now and requires either a fresh install or Cloud Foundation 3.0.1.x as the base station for an upgrade.
