Businesses can rein in potentially damaging cloud sprawl using a free service launched by Southern Cross Computer Systems.
The MapMyCloud service, based on ScienceLogic’s CloudMapper technology, enables customers to map their Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud resources and relationships, and pinpoint where they can decommission unused AWS instances to save money.
Southern Cross Enterprise Services general manager Simon Heath describes MapMyCloud as a “hook” to encourage customers to sign up to its monitoring-as-a-service, which is also based on ScienceLogic technologies.
Launched in August 2015, MapMyCloud will help Southern Cross’ managed services team generate more revenue, and promote the service provider’s strategic planning and consulting services.
What is cloud sprawl?
Cloud sprawl kicks in when business teams and technology organisations deploy cloud services without talking to each other or following an agreed process. It occurs in part because business team members can simply buy cloud services on their credit cards and claim the cost on expenses.
A company that experiences cloud sprawl may risk compromising its IT cost, management and governance processes.
An Southern Cross customer can view a completed map of its AWS resources and relationships one to two hours after making the request through MapMyCloud.
According to Southern Cross, MapMyCloud shows relationships involving Amazon Auto Scaling groups, Amazon Virtual Private Clouds and subnets, Amazon Simple Storage Service buckets, Amazon CloudTrail, Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud instances and other AWS services.
Customers using Southern Cross monitoring-as-a-service based on ScienceLogic include ServiceStream and MV Manufacturing.
