Social networking overtakes calls on N97

The N97 has a tilting touch display, five megapixel camera and a customisable home screen where users can add widget feeds such as social networking sites, news services, shopping, sport and the weather.

Emile Baak general manager Nokia A/NZ said the N97 combines the best of a mobile phone and a personal computer.

"It opens up a new phase for the mobile," he said.

"When you search for a hotel or restaurant the applications are much more location based. They are more efficient which makes life easier for the user.

"The applications are the next wave of revenue growth for Nokia, rather than digital content alone the phone is a combination of personal preference, geographical location and time."

Baak said phones are not just about talk and text anymore.

He said less than 10 percent of people use their phone for basic calls which means 90 percent of people are using it for web browsing, emails and social networking.

"The mobile convergence is in full motion," he added.

"The N97 extends the Nokia brand products connecting people by increased use of the internet. It marks a shift into a new era of mobile internet."

The Nokia Ovi Store was launched a month ago and is available to 75 Nokia devices.

Baak said it offers a combination of free and paid applications but Nokia has no control over the price of each application.

He said a developer can publish their own widget on the Ovi Store and then sets the price accordingly.

It takes a week for Nokia to approve a new widget and the revenue is split 70/30 between the developer and the publisher respectively.

The Nokia 97 is available through Optus, Vodafone and selected retailers with an RRP of $1,129.

The Australian Ovi Store supports operator billing through Telstra, Optus, Vodafone and Crazy John's.
